Beinn A’ Chroin; 13 January 2024
My first Munro of 2024 (and 24th overall). My original plan was to do two Munros this day, Beinn A’ Chroin (Hill of Danger) and the nearby An Caisteal. The parking area was near the incredibly picturesque Falls of Falloch that I have visited several times. The hike followed the River Falloch for several miles, as it ascended to its source. Near its source I broke away from the river to climb the ridge up Beinn A’ Chroin. The route quickly became covered in thickly packed snow, making progress difficult even with crampons on. Unfortunately, my crampons broke just before the Beinn A’ Chroin summit. I was able to struggle my way up the last bit of the climb up Beinn A’ Chroin, but made the decision to descend rather than try to continue to An Caisteal. Even the descent was difficult without crampons, resulting in me bum sliding on the snowpack most of the way down. Once I get new crampons I plan to return to redeem myself by completing An Caisteal.
